Klerksdorp, North West Province

Klerksdorp is a city found in the North West Province of South Africa, and is the largest city in the province. The capital of the province is Mahikeng, is situated about 170 km from Klerksdorp. You will also find that the city of Johannesburg is 170 km from the city. Klerksdorp was established in 1837 by the Voortrekkers on the shores of the Schoonspruit River. The name came from Jacob de Clerq, who was the first magistrate for the area in 1885.

Klerksdorp is run by the Matlosana Municipality and is surrounded by other towns like Orkney, Stilfontein, Tigane, Hartbeesfontein and Kanana amongst others. The well-known Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu was born in Klerksdorp on the 7th October 1931.

The economy of the city is fairly sound due to the mining industry in the area, as well as the agricultural industry, which produces products such as maize, groundnuts, and sunflower. The streets of this city are packed with old historical buildings and sites that bear tribute to the prospectors, who were here during the early gold rush period that took place in the area.

There is a lot to do in this city; a visit to the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve is a must. The reserve is only 13 km outside the city, where you can spot a variety of wildlife. There is also an abundance of birdlife and boasts more than 30 different species. Then there is the Klerksdorp Museum, which is housed in different historic buildings. The main building, a previous prison, was built in 1891. Here you will find farm implements and ox carts; you will also be able to learn some of the cultural history.

A huge attraction to the city is the Rio Casino Resort, which was opened in 2002 and is the biggest casino on the African Continent.
