Kroonstad, Free State Province
Kroonstad is a city located in the Free State Province; in fact it is the third largest city within the Province. The city can be found along the Vals River, which is a branch of the well-known Vaal River. Kroonstad is also conveniently located only about two hours away from Johannesburg. There are a number of main roads in the area; the N1 being the road linking the city to Bloemfontein and in the opposite direction, Johannesburg. There is also a major railway interchange within the area, which forms part of the main line that runs through from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The city was named after the horse of a Voortrekker known as Sarel Cilliers.
The region has wide open spaces, which lends to the city’s main industry agriculture; the area produces products like maize, wheat, wool, as well as meat and dairy products. One of the town’s major features besides the river is the Bloemhoek Dam, which supplies the area with water. Along the Vals River you will find a number of Guest Houses, Lodges, and a caravan park. Also along the River is the Kroonstad Country Club Golf Course. The River is popular with those who wish to participate in recreational activities like fishing and other water sports.
There are a few Primary, Secondary and High School options in Kroonstad, some of which can be found in central Kroonstad along with some popular restaurants. Shopping Malls include the Panorama Plaza and the Maokeng Mall along with a few other smaller centres. The Netcare Kroon Hospital can be found adjacent to the main R76 Road. Kroonstad also has the Boitumelo regional Hospital.
Some of the suburbs and areas within Kroonstad include Panorama, Noordhoek, and Tuinhof amongst others. There is also an Industrial area located along the Vals River, adjacent to Brent Park. Further outside of Kroonstad you still have rural areas and Small Holdings.
Panorama is a suburb in Kroonstad located along the R34 and is adjacent to the Kroon Park Resort as well as the Kroonstad Golf Course. The area consists of a number of guest houses as well as an NG Church. Properties for sale in the region includes some wonderful family homes, many of which sell for under R900 000. Further along, the main road is the Tuinhof area, which has similar properties for sale. The Noordhoek area can be found adjacent to the Afrikaans Kroonstad High School along the R76. Properties here are all reasonably priced older houses.
Interesting places to visit in Kroonstad include the Sarel Cilliers Monument and Bridge, both are historical Landmarks. Kroonstad also has a number of hiking trails available and if you are adventurous you can experience some horseback riding in the region. Located just outside the town along the R34, you will find the Boskoppie Lion and Tiger Reserve. The reserves main objective is to conserve the Bengal Tiger as well as the wild lions of Africa. The reserve offers accommodation, tours and is a unique venue for your wedding.
