Mahikeng, Northern Cape
Mahikeng also well-known as Mafikeng is the capital city of the North West Province and lies close to the borders of Botswana. The city is most recognised for the part it played in the Siege of Mafeking, which happened during the Second Boer War. Today the city is a commercial centre for the region and plays a large part in the tourism industry. The area also falls under the Dr Ngaka Modiri Molema District of the North West Province.
The city has an interesting history and culture; along with the wildlife in the area and surrounds, makes this a unique destination. Johannesburg is about a three and a half hours drive away, while Cape Town sits over 1000km away. The two larger features that stand out in the area, is the Molopo River and the Mafikeng Game Reserve.
The Molopo River, one of the larger rivers in South Africa, can be found to the north west of Mafikeng. Close to the city in the Mmabatho area you will also find some large dams namely the Setumo Dam and the Disaneng Dam. The Molopo River also runs through the Mafikeng Game Reserve, which takes up quite a large area on the eastern side of the city. The Reserve has a variety of wildlife, but the main attraction is the white Rhino. Another positive draw card to the area is that it is a malaria free zone with mild weather most of the time.
The Mafikeng Museum is a great place to visit if you are in the area, here you will learn all about the siege of Mafikeng and also about the history of the region. There are a number of displays including an old steam locomotive and some pre-historic artefacts. The museum itself is an historical building that dates all the way back to 1902.
Mafikeng is home to the North West University campus. There are a number of schools in the area including the Mafikeng Primary school and an International School of South Africa amongst others. There are also a few shopping centres in the area, the Mafikeng Mall and the Mega City Shopping Centre. Both centres offer a variety of stores; Mega City being the only one that has a cinema complex in Mafikeng. There are a number of restaurants throughout the city as well as within the Mega City Shopping centre. Located a short distance from the main city area, is the Mafikeng International Airport. The region also has its fair share of accommodation options from lodges to hotels and guest houses. The Protea Hotel by Marriott can be found closer to the city centre while the Buffalo Lodge is on the edges of town closer to the Game Reserve.
There are a number of farm properties for sale in the Mafikeng area. Other properties available include some houses, vacant land and commercial properties. Some of the suburbs within the city include residential areas as well as the Mafikeng Industrial region. Located a short distance from the Industrial area is the Victoria Private Hospital.
