The North West Province of South Africa is bordered by a large portion of Botswana with other surrounding areas including the Limpopo, Gauteng, Free State and the Northern Cape Provinces. The capital of the region is Mahikeng, which is more commonly known as Mafikeng. The city is located close to the Botswanan Border and is home to the North West University. The Mafikeng Game Reserve is also in this region, which provides excellent game viewing.
Rustenburg, which is located at the base of the Magaliesberg Mountains is considered the biggest town or city in the North West Province. The Gauteng Province can be found to the east of the region with surrounding areas including Limpopo, Free State and the Northern Cape. The North West is divided into four district municipalities including the Bojanala Platinum District, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, Ngaka Modiri Molema District, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. These districts are further divided into local municipalities.
Major geographical features of the region include the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains, which is located in the northeast and stretches from the Pretoria area to Rustenberg. The Vaal River flows to the south of the province along the border where you can also find the Sandveld Nature Reserve and the Bleomhof Dam Nature Reserve.
The economy of the region relies on the mining sector, which includes gold, uranium, platinum and diamonds. There are also quite a few sheep farms located further to the northern and western parts of the province. Here you will also find plenty of cattle and game ranches. Other sections of the North West are favourable for growing crops including corn, tobacco, cotton, and sunflowers.
There is also the well-known and popular Sun City and Lost City Resorts. Here you will find plenty of entertainment, restaurants and things to do. The Resort is famous for its Valley of Waves and can be located along the edges of the Pilanesberg National Park. The Resort is also conveniently only a two hour drive away from Johannesburg. The Hartebeespoort Dam is a beautiful and scenic region, located close to the Pretoria area. The area offers a great getaway destination for those who enjoy a bit of water sports, hiking and bird watching. Close to the dam is the Hartebeespoort Elephant Sanctuary where you will get to learn all about and interact with the gentle giants.
The North West Province is home to two major universities, these include the University of the North West and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.
