Northern Cape Province
The Northern Cape is considered to be the biggest Province in South Africa, but seems to have a low population density and large distances between each its towns. The capital of the Northern Cape Is Kimberley, which is also where you will find the Kimberley Mine or as it is known today, the Big Hole. This area was well-known for its diamond mining and is the location where the De Beers Company was originally formed.
The Province has the Atlantic Ocean on its Western side; along the coastline you will find places like the small domestic seaport of Port Nolloth. There is also Alexander bay located at the mouth of the Orange River. The Northern Cape also borders onto Namibia and a section of Botswana. Other local surrounding regions include the North West Province, the Free State, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. The province has five district municipalities with each one having a number of their own municipalities. You have the Frances Baard District, John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Namakwa District, Pixley ka Seme District, and the ZF Mgcawu District.
The economy of the region relies mainly on its mining and agricultural sectors. There is also some sheep farming done in the more dry areas of the Southern Karoo. The Orange River runs through a large section of the Province and this attracts many tourists who enjoy some river rafting. There are also a number of Parks in the region and these include the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, the Augrabies Falls National Park, Namaqua National Park, Mokala National Park amongst others.
Properties for sale in the region include a number of houses, farms and vacant land. Depending on where you want to buy, you can get a three bedroom house for under R2 million. Sutherland, which is a popular tourist area, you can buy a three bedroom home for under R1 million.
The Namaqualand area of the Northern Cape is a very well-known region for its beautiful flower displays in spring. The Eye’ is a natural spring found in the town and is considered the largest spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
Upington is quite a large town located on the banks of the Orange River. Even though Upington can get very hot during the summer months, the town has a famous and successful wine Industry. These wines are exported internationally under the name of Orange River Cellars. Upington also has its own airport, which mainly serves as an international cargo centre that exports and imports certain goods like grapes and cars.
Sutherland also falls into the Northern Cape Region. The town lies quite high above sea level, which makes the night skies in the area the clearest and darkest in South Africa. This is why the area has the South African Astronomical Observatory, which is also a huge tourist attraction for the area. The North West also has a few other well-known towns like De Aar, Colesberg, Calvinia, Pofadder and Prieska, but there are many other small towns scattered all over the large Northern Cape Province.
