Pretoria, Gauteng Province
The city of Pretoria can be located just over 68 km north of the city of Johannesburg and falls within the Gauteng Province. Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, one of three capitals which also include Cape Town as the legislative capital and Bloemfontein as the judicial capital. Pretoria is also a part of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Tshwane has also been put forward as the new name for Pretoria, but this is still under discussion. Many fondly refer to Pretoria as the ‘Jacaranda City’; this is because there are numerous Jacaranda trees in gardens and also lining the street pavements. When in full bloom, the city is a beautiful place to be.
Pretoria has a vast and impressive history and therefore the city has many museums, memorials and heritage sites.
Some of the buildings still represent the architectural styles of ages gone by. These include influences from the Dutch, German and British cultures. Some buildings that stand out in the region include the Union Buildings, and the Voortrekker Monument.
There are a number of schools and universities in the region including the county’s largest residential University, the University of South Africa. Pretoria is also home to the Tshwane University of Technology, the University of Pretoria and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Some of the suburbs located within Pretoria include Brooklyn, Hatfield, Faerie Glen, and Mamelodi amongst many others. Each of these suburbs has their own small businesses, shops, schools and restaurants.
The CBD of Pretoria is the major centre for commerce in the region, with its shopping centers, larger businesses and corporations, banks and other government departments. The city has a recognizable skyline with many tall buildings and skyscrapers, the tallest building being the Poyntons Building. Other notable tall buildings include the ABSA building as well as the Reserve Bank of South Africa. Another popular structure or venue is the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, which is the home of the Blue Bulls Rugby team.
The properties for sale in the area include some more affluent areas like Pretoria East, which offers modern large and luxurious homes, many of which are located in exclusive security estates. While in places like Pretoria east; you will find more affordable homes.
Some interesting places to visit in Pretoria; when you are in the area you must visit the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens. Other places include the Church Square, the Historical Landmark Pretoria Railway Station and so much more. Pretoria also has some nature reserves, the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, the Wonderboom Nature Reserve and the Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
Pretoria also has its own popular golf clubs, the main one being the Pretoria Golf Club, and then you also have the Hillside Golf Club, the Sandonia Golf Club, and the Waterkloof Golf Club. For those visiting the area, there are a variety of accommodation options. Close to central Pretoria, you will find three major hotels including the Manhattan Hotel, the Morningstar Express Hotel, and the very high-end Sheraton Pretoria Hotel.
