Rustenburg, North West Province
Rustenburg is a city located close to the edge of the Magaliesberg Mountains within the North West Province. The city is only just over an hour and a half drive from Pretoria, which lies to the east of Rustenburg. The Kgaswane Nature Reserve borders the city to the South West, with other surrounding areas including Waterkloof, Kroondal, Phokeng, Freedom Park, and Marikana amongst others. Main Roads that lead to and from the city include the M4, R24, R104 and the R510.
The Bospoort Dam lies to the north east of Rustenburg, which is fed by the Hex River that also flows through parts of Rustenburg. The region is rich in Platinum and has two of the largest mines in the world as well as a platinum refinery. This refinery helps to process more than half the world’s platinum. Just a short distance from Rustenburg is the Phokeng area, which is where you will find the Royal Bafokeng Nation. This is also where the Bafokeng Stadium is located, which had some renovations done in time for the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Some of the suburbs in the area include Rustenburg North, Waterval East, Protea Park and Boitekong amongst others. Properties for sale in the area include some luxury homes located on exclusive security estates to the more affordable homes in places like Waterkloof East. Other properties available include some farms, apartments, townhouses and commercial properties.
Rustenburg also has a number of historic buildings and interesting places to visit; along with being so close to other major cities, makes it an ideal tourist destination. Most of these buildings are local churches in the area. You have the Dutch Reform Church, which was made a provincial heritage site as well as the Anglican Church. There is also the Paul Kruger Museum, the statue of a Voortrekker Girl and the Gandhi Memorial. Rustenburg also has its own Golf Club and good quality 18-hole course.
Rustenburg also has the Olympia Park Stadium, which is located adjacent to the Rustenburg Golf Course. This stadium was used to host some games during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Rustenburg also has its own municipal airport, which is also the location of the Rustenburg Sky Diving Club. Those who wish to stay in the area have a variety of accommodation choices from upmarket guest houses to bed and breakfast and hotel lodges.
Rustenburg also has some shopping centres including the Rustenburg Square, Platinum Square shopping centre and the Waterval Mall. Some of the major attractions to the area include some Game Parks. You have the Kgaswane Mountain reserve, which as mentioned borders the town. The Reserve offers some great hiking trails and facilities for picnics, a great place for nature lovers and families. One of the attractions within the reserve is the Kgaswane Rustenburg Waterfall. Then you have the Pilansberg games Reserve located north of Rustenburg, close to this you will also find the popular Sun City resort. The Resort offers plenty of entertainment including some world-class golf courses.
