Upington, Northern Cape
Upington is a city located along the Orange River in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The town was originally established in 1884 and was known as Olyfenhoudtsdrif, because of the abundance of Olive trees found around the region. Before this the area was the location of a mission station. The town was later changed to Upington after the Prime Minister of the Cape at the time, a Sir Thomas Upington.
Even though the area is known to be very hot and dry, you have the Orange River running through. This makes the land fertile and lush, and for this reason, Upington produces some of the best grapes and other fruit. The area is also well-known for its quality wine under the name of Orange River Cellars.
The fact that the Orange River runs through the area and that it is the biggest town close to the Augrabies Falls National Park, attracts quite a few visitors each year. You will find quite a few accommodation options such as the Protea Hotel by Marriott and Die Eiland Holiday Restort along the Orange River in Upington. Also in this section are a number of restaurants and other businesses. Another attraction in this area is the Kalahari Orange Museum, which used to be part of the old mission building. Here you will also find a statue of a donkey, which shows appreciation for the animal for its role in the development of the area during the pioneer days.
Each suburb has access to a number of different public and private schools in the Johannesburg area. The main universities include the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. There are also many other private Colleges in the region. The entire Johannesburg area offers visitors and residents a number of choices when it comes to shopping centres. There are many large and popular Malls throughout the area. To mention a few; the Mall of Africa, Melrose Arch and the Sandton City Shopping centre.
Traveling around Johannesburg is relatively easy because of the number of main roads and highways throughout the area. Also, if you find the roads a bit too congested, you have access to the Gautrain. This railway service can take you through to Pretoria and the OR Tambo International Airport. This airport provides flights to both domestic as well as International destinations. Another important airport in Johannesburg is the Lanseria Airport.
